Wallace State’s women’s golf wins 4th straight WSCC Fall Invite; Cross country teams finish 2nd at UNA

Wallace State's women's golf team opened the fall slate by winning a 4th straight WSCC Fall Invitational championship.

HANCEVILLE, ALA. –  Wallace State’s women’s golf team opened its fall slate last Friday at Cross Creek Golf Course, winning its fourth consecutive Wallace State Fall Invitational.  

Wallace State sophomore Lauren Cole was the low medalist, carding a 1-under par 71 in the 18-hole event. 

Sophomore Maddie Nelson and freshman Hannah Sanders also made the All-Tournament team for Wallace State. Nelson, a Vestavia Hills grad, finished with a 4-over 76 and Sanders added an 8-over 80.  

The Lady Lions finished with a collective 315. The tournament field also included Calhoun, Jeff State, Snead State and Northeast Community College.  

“I was very pleased with how our team played, especially Lauren Cole and Maddie Nelson. I was also impressed with our freshmen playing as effectively as they did during their first collegiate tournament,” said Wallace State women’s golf coach J.J. Adams. “Considering the COVID-19 restrictions we’ve faced at times, we have to be pleased. We look forward to getting better and better.”  

Abigail Baker (88), Emma Zaiontz (90) and Carly Havens (92) rounded out the field for Wallace State.  

The tournament was reduced to 18 rounds after the first day was rained out.  

Wallace State travels to Athens on Oct. 5 for a Martin Methodist-hosted tournament. 

Wallace State cross country 

Both Wallace State cross country teams finished second in their respective meets at the University of North Alabama Cross Country Invitational over the weekend.  

Wallace State’s men, ranked fifth nationally, finished with a 2:19.46 collective mark in the 8K.  

The Lady Lions, ranked fourth nationally, recorded a 1:50.04 in the women’s 5K.  

For the Wallace State men, Jonathan Jenkins (27:23.02) finished eighth overall and Taylor Nails (27.35.88) was right behind in ninth.  

Freshman Raleigh Stamps placed 11th with a 27:39.39.  

Nails and Stamps have been among Wallace State’s top two runners in all three races this fall.  

Jikori James (28:27.46) and Dakota Sheppard (28:40.05) finished 14th and 15th respectively for the Lions. Blake Terry (29:43.67), Jonathan Collett (30:10.09) and Trenton Williams (33:30.12) rounded out the field for Wallace State.  

For the Wallace State women, freshman Jaycee Biffle finished fourth overall with a 21:18.19.  

Jennifer Aviles placed ninth for the Lady Lions with a 21:47.71 and Ally Amerson was 11th with a 22:08.87.  

Wallace State had four women finish consecutively in the 13-16 spots: Juliana Ballew (22:22.42), Katie O’Malley (22:26.10), Breanna Smith (22:28.67) and Cassidy Winter (22:30.31).  

Both Wallace State teams travel to Blue Mountain College in Mississippi on Thursday.
