Wallace State Community College awarded $24,500 for STEAM programming

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Wallace State Community College recently received $24,500 from the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) to provide STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and the Arts) learning opportunities to area K-12 students.

These funds will also support Wallace State’s successful North Alabama BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) Robotics program, an annual competition for middle and high school students that engages, excites and teaches students about engineering, science, technology, marketing, teamwork, and other areas. Teams build robots and compete on the Coliseum floor during gameday, in addition to presenting marketing plans and gameday booths. Winning teams advance to the South’s Regional at Auburn University.

Additional grant funds will be used at Wallace State to host STEM Days to area 5th-grade students. Wallace State’s STEM Days are a competitive offering designed to engage up to 150 5th graders in science, technology, engineering, math, and computer science career exposure. One day each semester, area students will come to campus to participate in activities with Wallace State’s STEM faculty. Camp registration will begin in the spring of 2021.
Those interested in these STEAM activities for their children are encouraged to contact Todd Hardman at todd.hardman@wallacestate.edu or 256.352.8146, or Jamie Newman at Jamie.newman@wallacestate.edu or 256.352.7424.
