Wallace State-Oneonta’s welding program awarded grant for expansion
HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State-Oneonta‘s welding program has received a grant of $68,000 from the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) to expand its facility.
Welding was unveiled at Oneonta in 2017 with 10 booths, featuring state-of-the-art equipment, including Lincoln PowerWave technology welding machines and Lincoln Electric fume extractor arms systems, allowing students the opportunity to work in a safe and clean welding environment.
Wallace State-Oneonta‘s welding program, under the direction of instructor Chris Posey, has blossomed ever since. The demand for welding training has increased in Blount County, and the planned expansion will double the number of students to be trained each semester.
“Wallace State’s welding graduates will have an easy time finding high-wage work near Oneonta,” said Wes Rakestraw, Wallace State’s Dean of Applied Technologies and the Director of Oneonta campus. “This program is already supplying welders for KAMTEK, Fontain and Tennessee Valley Metals, among others. Recent graduates usually begin working by earning an average of $18-22 per hour.”
Prospective students interested in the Wallace State-Oneonta welding program are encouraged to contact 205.625.4020 or Posey at 205.762.0632 or chris.posey@wallacestate.edu.
Registration for Spring Semester 2021 is underway at www.wallacestate.edu/register.
