HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State Community College’s Center for Career and Workforce Development Department recently hosted an inaugural two-day Leadership Lions Course for employees within the Cullman County Commissioner’s Office.

Led by Jamie Newman, Wallace State’s Career Navigator, the training course focused on individual leadership, team development, communication skills and common leadership conundrums.

“Our department works hard to meet the needs of both the students and community, and an important part of that task centers on getting to know our local employers and keeping up with their developing, hiring and training needs,” Newman said. “During last year’s online career fair, it was mentioned several of our local employers wanted leadership training for their new managers and supervisors. Our team collaborated and decided to create a training session.”

At the course’s conclusion, the goal is for managers to have begun to develop their identity as a leader, to define the culture of their team and to work through common leadership problems.

“The modules approach the individual and team from a neuroscience/psychology perspective. We discuss not just what is happening, but why it’s happening. We utilize assessments, activities and discussions to deepen understanding,” Newman said.

Bradley Williams, the Cullman County Director of Economic Development, was among the inaugural cohort to attend the Leadership Lions session.

“We have a good mix of directors, supervisors and employees from all departments here. Anytime you can learn more about yourself, leadership and how to help your employees, it’s time well spent,” Williams said.

Delitha Marchman of the Cullman County Commission’s safety department agreed.

“This has been very beneficial because it’s something not addressed very often. We go about our daily routines, go home and don’t consider or understand the different emotions our coworkers go through and how they might perceive us,” Marchman said.

Thirteen members of the Cullman County Commissioner’s Office were in attendance.

Other employers within the county, including the Sheriff’s Office and Topre, have expressed interest in attending the Leadership Lions Course in the future.

“We’re excited to be able to meet our community’s needs in new and ever-changing ways,” Newman said. “We hope to continue to evolve in our offerings to both our students and the community.”
