Scholarship applications deadline nears for 2021-2022 academic year; available to current and incoming Wallace State students

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — Wallace State Community College is currently accepting applications for institutional scholarships, with a deadline to apply of Feb. 16. There are a number of scholarships available to current Wallace State students as well as incoming freshmen. Scholarships will be awarded for up to two academic years beginning in Fall 2021.

Scholarships available include:

  • Presidential Scholarships
  • Academic Excellence Scholarships
  • Leadership Scholarships
  • Performing Arts Scholarships
  • Allied Health and Nursing Scholarships
  • Career Technical Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis and are not guaranteed based on meeting minimum requirements in any category. Minimum requirements vary by scholarship.

The Fine and Performing Arts scholarships require an audition, with auditions planned for Feb. 12 and March 5. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with auditions held from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Visit www.wallacestate.edu/fpa for more information or contact Heather Gillikin at 256.352.8277 or heather.gillikin@wallacestate.edu.

Noah Dia is a computer science major and recipient of the Leadership Scholarship.

Computer Science major Noah Dia received the Leadership Scholarship, helping ease the financial burden of attending college. “A college education is well worth it, but it can be expensive and out of reach for many,” Dia said. “Being a full-time student while struggling to find a way to pay for tuition and books is a stressful situation. The Leadership Scholarship relieved that stress for me so that I can focus on my classes.”

Dia is currently serving as the first president of the newly-formed Society of Leadership and Success organization on campus and is the host of live Wallace State News segments aired on the Wallace State Facebook page.

Haley Self-Tumlin, who recently completed the Building Construction program and previously completed the Engineering Technology program received the Career Technical Scholarship from Wallace State, agreed with Dia.

Wallace State Community College student Haley Self-Tumlin, center, of Warrior, received the Presidential Award for Technical Excellence for the Class of 2020. She was a recipient of the Career Technical Scholarship.

“I wasn’t stressed about working more hours,” she said. “I had time to focus on classes, homework and extracurricular activities, like Phi Beta Kappa, Campus Ministries and the Student Government Association.”

That extra time also allowed her to apply for and receive other scholarships through the Future Foundation and spend more time networking within her programs and creating connections that helped lead to full-time employment in her field. She advises students to fill out their FAFSA early, apply for as many scholarships as possible, have letters of recommendation ready, and speak with the heads of their programs to get information on what scholarships may be available to them.

Students may apply for multiple WSCC Scholarships; however, they can be awarded only one as the institutional scholarships are not stackable. Once awarded, a recipient must maintain a minimum GPA each semester; other requirements vary by scholarship.

Scholarship applications must be completed online by Feb. 16. Find the link to the application at www.wallacestate.edu/financial-aid/wscc-scholarships. Students applying for scholarships are required to apply for Federal Aid at www.fafsa.gov. A WSCC application for admission, official transcripts, and a scholarship application must be on file at the college before a scholarship can be awarded.

For additional information or questions, contact Stacey Sivley at 256.352.8241 or stacey.sivley@wallacestate.edu.

Additional scholarship opportunities are being offered through the Wallace State Future Foundation, with applications open through March 5. The Future Foundation lists more than 150 scholarships, some open to students in any program and others for specific programs or students. These scholarships are geared toward filing the gap between students who may not qualify for financial aid or other scholarships and to assist students who may need a little help in completing their education. Future Foundation scholarships are stackable and can also be combined with WSCC Scholarships.  Qualifications for the scholarships vary. Visit www.wsccfuturefoundation.org for more information.
