Wallace State baseball drops four-game series to Shelton State, loses a pair by one run

HANCEVILLE – Wallace State’s baseball team split a doubleheader against Shelton State at home over the weekend before losing a pair of one-run affairs in Tuscaloosa.
Andres Suarez’s two-out bunt single in the bottom of the tenth plated Wallace State’s Andrew Dennis in the series opener, lifting the Lions to a 6-5 victory. Wes Gillespie (2-0) picked up the win the relief after tossing four scoreless innings. The Oneonta native held the Bucs hitless, striking out four.
Jeremiah Tullidge finished with three singles, a walk and two runs scored for Wallace State, Nathan Vincent was 2 for 5 with two RBIs, Haydon Bogard contributed a pair of singles, an RBI and two runs and Brodie Jeffery finished with a double and two walks and was hit twice.
Wallace State ace Bret Marks, a 22nd round draft pick of the New York Yankees last June, was the tough-luck loser in the second game as Shelton State edged out a 2-0 win. Marks (2-2) suffered the loss despite allowing only one earned run and striking out five in seven innings. Vincent had a pair of hits in the loss and Tullidge added a double.
Shelton State pitchers Trevor Sprowl and Henri Faucheux combined on the three-hit shutout.
In Tuscaloosa, Wallace State (10-10-1, 3-5 ACCC) lost the final games of the series, 6-5 and 4-3.
Vincent finished 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored in the third game, Sawyer Williams was 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored, Wayne Carrell had two hits, including a double, and an RBI and Tullidge, Dennis and Jeffery each added singles. Alex Hegner started Game 3 for the Lions and went 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on six hits.
In the 4-3 loss, Bogard finished 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, Tullidge was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Dennis was 2 for 2 and Vincent contributed a run-scoring single.
Wallace State resumes conference play Thursday, hosting Calhoun at 3 p.m.
