WSCC Relay For Life team raises more than $4,000 for American Cancer Society

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — The Wallace State Community College Relay For Life team raised more than $4,000 for the American Cancer Society during the annual Relay For Life of Cullman County Campaign.
More than 20 students, faculty and staff joined the team, with many more supporting their efforts to raise funds that will go toward research, patient and family support services, education and more. The 2017 effort was dedicated to math instructor Renee Quick, who has been battling breast cancer. The most successful fundraiser was a T-shirt sale, in which the shirts featured the phrase “Find a Cure Quick” over a mathematic graphic, created in Quick’s honor.
Other fundraisers included a painting party based on the team’s overall theme of Steel Magnolias held at The Art Shop Around the Corner, selling concessions at the Beauty of Hope pageant held by fellow Relay For Life team Cullman Primary Care, sales of the Celebrating a Golden Anniversary Cookbook (copies are still available), individual fundraising efforts by team members, and donations from supporters.
As a team member herself, Quick raised $435 on her own, giving her a total of $2,035 after the $1,600 proceeds from the sale of the shirts was dedicated toward her efforts. Student Emily Corbett followed with a total of $385 raised individually.
“I would like to thank everyone who contributed to our efforts this year,” said Gail Crutchfield, captain of the Wallace State team. “This year was the most successful in recent years. I can only hope we can continue to increase our donations to ACS.”
Fundraising efforts for the year will continue through the end of August, with a new fundraising year beginning in September. The Wallace State team welcomes current and former students, faculty and staff to join their team.
