Wallace State offering Building Construction courses, degree beginning with Fall 2017 semester

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State Community College has added a Building Construction to its program offerings.
Five Building Construction classes will be offered this fall 2017 semester, and students can pursue an associate’s degree or certificate in the new program, which falls under the umbrella of Engineering Technology.
“We are excited to add this program, and I believe it will become a popular option. I want people in the community to be excited about it. I’m interested and intrigued to see the program built from a blank slate,” said Jimmy Hodges, Wallace State’s Dean of Applied Technologies. “We are here to help our students get jobs, and it’s always important to offer new degree options for them.”
Lynn White, who has more than 20 years of experience within the construction industry, has been hired as a Building Construction instructor. White is a former instructor at the Gadsden Job Corps Center.
“Carpentry or woodworking has always been my golf. It was a hobby for me before I started a business,” said White. “I love to share my knowledge with students, and there’s nothing better than having a student who wants to learn. It’s my passion. It’s a great feeling to see the light go off in their mind.”
Students can register for the following Building Construction classes this fall: BUC 110 – Basic Construction Tools and Materials; BUC 113 – Basic Construction Blueprint; BUC 121 – Floors and Wall Framing; BUC 133 Building Codes and BUC 170 Framing Lab. The courses are classified under Engineering Technology classes in the fall semester schedule.
While Wallace State has offered carpentry-type courses in the past, the new program is the first for students looking to earn a certificate and an associate’s degree in Building Construction.
It’s hard to make a living as a tradesman now without a degree behind your name or business. You can get a little work here and there, but as far as maintaining a business, it’s tough,” White said. “The proper credentials can go a long way.”
In addition to producing Building Construction graduates who are ready to join the workforce, White and Hodges hope the program will be active in community service projects like Habitat for Humanity.
“From hosting short-term community projects to getting a hammer in someone’s hand, I think this program can generate a lot of interest,” Hodges said. “There are also many contractors in the area, and we hope to forge strong relationships with them.”
