No. 18 Wallace State volleyball wins four matches during season-opening tournament

HANCEVILLE – Wallace State volleyball, ranked No. 18 nationally, opened the season over the weekend, winning four of five matches in its sixth annual season-opening tournament.
The Lions (4-1) cruised to victories over Walters (Tenn.) State, Andrew (Ga.) College, St. John’s River (Fla.) CC and Snead State, sweeping each opponent in three sets. Their lone tournament loss was to rival Gadsden State.
Sophomore setter Nicole Penny finished with a combined 97 assists and 12 digs, while fellow sophomore Kianna Delaney contributed 48 kills, nine blocks and six digs.
Several Wallace State freshmen had impressive starts to their collegiate careers. Montana Clark finished with a combined 46 digs and 42 kills, Bethany Johnson collected 55 kills, 19 digs, seven aces and six blocks, BreAnna Thompson finished with 46 kills and seven digs and Rosemary Wendel added 64 digs.
Taylor Traglia had 39 assists over the five-match stretch, Kaci Kirk added 30 assists and Payton Norris finished with 18 digs.
Wallace State opens conference play on the road Thursday against Jeff Davis in Brewton. The team then travels to Pensacola, Fla., on Friday and will play in a two-day tournament hosted by Pensacola State.
