Wallace State’s golf teams have high expectations; basketball teams at Shelton State today
HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s men’s golf team opened the 2018 season at the Titan Winter Invitational this week in Melbourne, Fla., finishing tied for seventh at the Suntree County Club.
Wallace State sophomore Brandon Lacasse finished tied for 14th individually with a 3-over par 219 (69-77-73).
Lacasse is one of three sophomores on this season’s squad along with Luke Wilson and Thomas Gevas.
“We’ve got three strong sophomores to lead the way this season and a good group of freshmen. We had some success in the fall, but we went through some valleys as well. We are working hard and getting better. We want to be our best in April and May and be a contender for multiple championships,” said Wallace State golf coach Dan York, a NJCAA Hall of Fame coach, who’s in his 31st year with the program.
During the fall season, Lacasse was the individual low medalist at the NJCAA District IV Preview and finished second individually at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Invitational – one of two fall tournament championships for Wallace State. The Lions also won their own Fall Invitational in September.
Lacasse has already secured a scholarship to Central Arkansas upon graduating from Wallace State, and Wilson, a Cullman grad, has signed with Montevallo.
Anthony Lumpkin, Conner Bruce, Logan Forrester, Cody Maddox, Garrison Smith and Houston Pierce make up Wallace State’s freshman class this season.
Ches Harris returns as the men’s assistant coach.
At the Titan Invitational, Wilson was right behind Lacasse, finishing with a 4-over 220 (75-74-71).
Lumpkin carded an 8-over 224 (77-68-79). Gevas and Bruce rounded out the field for the Lions.
York has led Wallace State’s men’s program to 13 ACCC championships and 22 NJCAA Division I national championship appearances.

Wallace State’s women open the season at the Northeast Alabama Tournament in Rainsville on Feb. 25.
The defending ACCC champion Lady Lions return Annalee Stephens and Dalys Mullican to the fold this season. Stephens was the ACCC tournament low medalist last season, and Mullican has already signed with Blue Mountain College for next season.
“Annalee and Dalys are good leaders and know what it takes to win. They’ve been part of a championship run. Add in our talented freshman and this team should be fun to follow,” said York, who led the women to a 12th-place finish at nationals last season.
Michaela Bryan, who won the Jeff State Invitational in November, highlights the freshman class with Maci Yeager, Anna Seahorn and Anna Williams.
Wallace State’s women will host the ACCC Tournament in Cullman on April 15-17.

Wallace State’s basketball teams head to nationally-ranked Shelton State on Saturday
Wallace State’s basketball teams continue ACCC play on the road today, visiting nationally-ranked Shelton State in Tuscaloosa.
Wallace State’s women are on a roll headed into the tilt, winning six straight games. The Lady Lions (18-6, 5-1 ACCC) extended their winning streak on Feb. 5 with an 81-56 victory over Gadsden State.
Gabby Hill had 16 points as the Lady Lions cruised, Joy Sadler had 14 points and Karlie Hudson finished with 11. Jada Golden added eight points off the bench and Sydney Powell had seven.
Wallace State now visits the top-ranked Shelton State Lady Bucs (26-0, 6-0), who are the last team to beat the Lady Lions. Wallace State can tie Shelton State in the ACCC North standings with a win in Tuscaloosa.
“I feel we are much more confident in ourselves than we were the last time we played Shelton State. We are playing with a chip on our shoulder. All year I’ve told our team we can be the best team in the league if we believe it,” said Wallace State interim coach Jessica McBrayer. “I don’t think we believed that the last time we played Shelton State. We have to believe and be confident in order to beat them. They’re the number one team in the nation for a reason.”
Meanwhile, the Wallace State men square off against the 12th-ranked Bucs in another key ACCC tilt.
Wallace State (13-11, 1-7 ACCC) is coming off a tough home loss to Gadsden State after the Cardinals pulled away in the final two minutes. Demarkus Lampley led Wallace State with 24 points, Jalen Hodges poured in 20 points and Jonathan Andre added 13.
