Wallace State baseball wins conference series against Snead State as regular season winds down

HANCEVILLE, ALA. — Wallace State’s baseball team completed a significant series win against Snead State over the weekend. After splitting a doubleheader in Boaz last Thursday, Wallace State swept Saturday’s action at James C. Bailey Stadium, taking three of four games in the series.
Randy Putman’s squad is tied for second place in the Alabama Community College Conference North Division with two league series remaining. The Lions are the defending ACCC North Division champions.
“It’s important for us to finish strong. We’ve got to continue to play well if we want a tournament bye. Hopefully, this will give us some momentum,” Putman said.
Wallace State (22-14, 15-9 ACCC) won Saturday’s games by scores of 9-6 and 8-2 behind sophomore pitchers Garrett Brown and Robert Coleman.
Brown (3-1) went 6 2/3 innings in the opener, allowing only three earned runs. Freshman Kevin Dowdell earned the save.
Sophomore Easton Kirk finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for Wallace State, while Jack Haney went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Brennan McCullough finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Nate Lloyd had two singles and drove in a pair of runs, and David Rutledge had two hits and an RBI. Caden Higgins and Ty Hill each had a single and scored.
In the second game, Coleman (4-3) tallied one of his most impressive outings of the season. He went the distance, allowing one earned run on three hits. He struck out three.
The Lions pounded out 12 hits in support of Coleman. Kirk was 2-for-4 with two more RBIs, while Noah Fondren went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and a run scored. Brady Sherrill finished 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored; Rutledge had a pair of singles with an RBI and a run scored; and Caleb Lipsey went 2-for-3.

In Wallace State’s series-opening victory against Snead State, Kirk finished 2-for-4 with a homer and six RBIs. Collin Rogers had three RBIs and Dowdell a pair.
Kirk, a sophomore from Piedmont, is hitting a robust .500 this season with 14 homers and 51 RBIs.
“Easton is having one of the best offensive seasons I’ve seen here in a long time. He’s squaring everything up and doing so with a bum hamstring,” Putman said.
Wallace State begins a series against Central Alabama in Alexander City on Thursday. The teams will continue the series at James C. Bailey Stadium on Saturday.
