Health Science faculty at Wallace State earn recognition

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — Several Wallace State Community College Heath Science faculty members have been recognized by community and professional organizations for their outstanding efforts.

Donna Conn, chair of the Health Information Technology and Medical Coding programs at Wallace State received the 2019 AAHIM Distinguished Member Award. Presented by the Alabama Association of Health Information Management, the award recognizes an active member with at least six years of service in the AAHIM who is marked by distinction, excellence of service and contribution to the profession. Previous award winners include Conn’s colleague at Wallace State, Sharon Horton Woodruff.

Deborah “Pepper” Hoover, director of the Department of Nursing Education at Wallace State received the Commitment to a Cause Award during the 2019 Cullman Regional Gala. The presentation noted Hoover’s contributions to improving quality health care as the director of Wallace State’s Nursing program. “She definitely has a passion for nursing and loves being a nurse, as well as being an educator and a nurse practitioner,” said presenter Champ Crocker.

Annette Harman, OTA instructor, was awarded the most recent Occupational Therapy Assistant of the Year award by the Alabama Occupational Therapy Association for her demonstrated excellence in her profession. Her colleague at Wallace State, Kelly Krigbaum, is a past winner of the same award.

Wallace State’s health science division boasts outstanding licensure rates for all its programs and the college has been ranked nationally for the health science graduates it produces.  Admission for fall semester is still open for the following programs:  Child Development, Emergency Medical Services, Health Information Technology/Medical Coding, Medical Assistant, Medical Laboratory Technician/Medical Laboratory Assistant, Pharmacy Technology, Polysomnography, and Therapeutic Massage.
