Wallace State’s March 11-12 Career Fairs attract strong numbers from students, employers

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s Center for Career and Workforce Development hosted a pair of Career Fairs on March 11-12, attracting 378 students and 96 companies between the two events.
“We are so grateful to all the companies that chose to participate and support our students and alumni. We hope that employers and students found the networking valuable and were able to connect prospects with current job vacancies,” said Wallace State’s Jamie Blackmon, the Director of Wallace State’s Center for Career and Workforce Development.
The March 11 Career Fair welcomed businesses and industries attractive to academic and Applied Technologies students. It was held at Traditions Bank Arena at Tom Drake Coliseum.
Ceana Compton and Brittani Floyd, both enrolled in Wallace State’s Automotive Service Technology program, were among the students to tour and converse with the employers on campus.
“This is a great way to see all of options on the horizon and what’s potentially available for you,” Compton said. “We didn’t want to miss it.”
Employers represented at the March 11 Career Fair featured advanced manufacturing and diesel technology companies, among other applied technologies fields. Multiple police departments and sheriff’s offices were in attendance in addition to insurance and hair care companies, among others. A U.S. Census representative was also on hand to recruit students for part-time work this summer.
The March 12 Health Science Career Fair was held at the School of Nursing and Center for Science’s Peinhardt Conference Center.
Multiple hospitals, nursing home facilities and nursing schools from four-year colleges and universities were among the employers present at the Health Science Career Fair.
Carl Davis, 54, is approaching the finish line in Wallace State’s nursing program. He’ll graduate in May after retiring from a 27-year teaching career at Decatur High as the choir director.
“It’s wonderful to have the employers here. You can ask questions you probably wouldn’t ask in an interview, and it eliminates searching websites and trying to find the right person to talk to about employment,” Davis said.
Shanese Manuel, a nursing student, was also impressed.
“I’ve talked with employers I had never considered and now I’m thinking about applying at some of those places,” Manuel said.
