WSCC Athletics: Men’s cross country wins Topper Trails championship, women runner-up; men’s golf finishes 3rd in Jasper

HANCEVILLE, ALA. –  Wallace State’s fifth-ranked men’s cross country team won the Blue Mountain College Topper Trails championship on Oct. 1, while the fourth-ranked Wallace State women finished tournament runner-up in Clinton, Miss.   

Wallace State’s men finished its 8K with a collective 2:21:24, outlasting host Blue Mountain.  

Sophomore Jonathan Jenkins was the meet’s individual runner-up and Taylor Nails was third. Jenkins, a Beauregard High grad, finished with a 27:20 in the 8K, missing out on the individual championship by a slim seven seconds. Nails, a Southside grad, clocked in right behind Jenkins with a 27:24.

Nails has finished in the top three for Wallace State in all four meets this season.  

Wallace State freshman Raleigh Stamps finished fifth overall with a 28:13. 

Sophomore Trenton Williams was 13th with a 28:56, while freshman Dakota Sheppard rounded out the top 20 by clocking in at 29:31.  

Jonathan Collett (29:51) and Blake Terry (29:54) finished 25th and 27th respectively for the Lions. Sophomore Dave Hubert (31:11) and Cole Akridge (31:30) rounded out the Wallace State field.  

Meanwhile, Wallace State’s women posted its second straight runner-up finish, posting a collective 1:50.34 in the 5K.  

Freshman Jayce Biffle placed eighth overall with a 21:38. Biffle, a Rogers High grad, has registered the Lady Lions’ top finish in two consecutive meets.  

Jennifer Aviles and Cassidy Winter placed 11th and 12th respectively. Aviles clocked in at 22:05 and Winters at 22:06. 

Wallace State’s Juliana Ballew (22:13), Ally Amerson (22:32), and Breanna Smith (22:41) accounted for places 16-18.  

Katie O’Malley (25:27) and Maggie Graham (27:32) rounded out the Wallace State field.  

Both teams are off until Oct. 16, when they travel to Birmingham for the UAB Blazer Classic.  

The Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) meet is Oct. 31 in Huntsville. Both Wallace State teams will seek their third consecutive conference titles.  

Wallace State men’s golf  

Wallace State sophomore Carter Goodwin finished tournament runner-up after falling in a one-hole playoff as the Lions opened their fall slate at Jasper last week in the ACCC/Region 22 Preview tournament aMusgrove Country Club.  

Goodwin carded a 7-under par 135 in 36-hole event. Goodwin is back for the Lions after being named a NJCAA Division I Honorable Mention All-American last spring, the 23rd All-American in program history.  

Wallace State finished third as a group, shooting a 10-over 578.  

Parker Davis and George Law tied for 17th overall for the Lions, each shooting an 8-over 150. Teammates Blane Armstrong and Alex Flint finished right behind them with respective 151s.  

Wallace State competes next at Central Alabama on Oct. 9-10.
