Wallace State Child Development extends deadline for Spring 2021 applications

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — The Wallace State Community College Child Development program has extended its application deadline for Spring 2021 entry through January 1, 2021.

The Child Development program at Wallace State offers four short-term certificate options, a certificate option and associate degree options, including one for those planning to transfer to a four-year university to complete a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education.

The short-term certificates earned through the program are stackable, meaning they can lead to earning the certificate and associate in applied science degree. The certificates can also be useful for those seeking employment while completing their education. Students who earn a minimum of nine hours in child development are qualified to obtain teaching positions as assistants in Head Start and First Class Pre-K classroom or other early care programs.

Students will learn all stages of child growth and development; get training and practical experience in conducting all types of learning activities with children; learn and apply techniques in positive guidance and discipline, health, safety and first aid practices, and learn about state minimum standards for day care centers and homes.

The Child Development program is one of several Health Science programs at Wallace State that is offered as Dual Enrollment for area high school students. It also taught completely online, allowing students to fit the classes into their schedule.

There are no prerequisite courses required in advance of applying to the program, nor is there a minimum ACT score requirement. Candidates for the program do need to possess a minimum GPA of 2.0 and have completed general admission to the college.
