Wallace State basketball teams welcome Shelton State on Thursday; Softball sweeps season opener

HANCEVILLE – Wallace State’s men’s basketball team, winners of nine consecutive games, welcomes rival Shelton State to town on Thursday night.

Wallace State is 21-3 overall and 12-3 in Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) action after registering an 81-54 victory over Bevill State at home on Monday night.

Sophomore Kuran Garner tallied his first double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds against the Bears. Jaylen Lemons scored 15 points and dished out six assists and Bruce Guy finished with 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Nathan Moore contributed 10 points and six rebounds, while Te’Derrius Williams had seven points and nine rebounds.

Wallace State outscored Bevill State 48-25 in the second half.

The Lions turn their attention to the 14th-ranked Bucs, who have won 13 straight games. Shelton State squeaked out a 67-65 win over the Lions on Jan. 13.

Wallace State dropped its following game on Jan. 15 and hasn’t lost since.

The conference doubleheader begins at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday as the Lady Lions, winners of four straight and seven of eight, host the No. 2 Lady Bucs, winners of 22 straight.

Wallace State’s seventh-ranked softball team swept Georgia Highlands in a season-opening doubleheader on Monday, winning 8-0 and 10-1.

Josie Thompson and Bailie Hall combined on a five-inning shutout in the opener. Thompson, a North Jackson grad, went three scoreless innings, striking out four, and Hall tossed the final two innings.

Sophomores Felicity Frame and Harper Niblett each had a pair of hits and an RBI for Wallace State. Frame tallied two stolen bases and Niblett one.

Jaiden Farnetti and Maddie Cartron each contributed a single and an RBI. Hall added a single.

In the second game, Wallace State pounded out six doubles among its nine hits. Sophomore Gracie Benton was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs.

Olivia Ball and Gracie Ashley each finished with two-run doubles, Sarah Beth Brake had an RBI double, and Cartron had a double, RBI and stolen base.

Frame singled, had an RBI, scored two runs and tallied two steals, while Niblett and Jessica Edde had a single and RBI apiece. Farnetti and Lauren Dill each added a stolen base.

Leigha Kirby was the winning pitcher, hurling three scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Abigail Bryars and Alivia Wilken tossed one scoreless inning apiece in relief.

Wallace State, the defending ACCC champion and two-time NJCAA Division I national champion, plays at Daytona State College today and Seminole State College on Thursday.
