Wallace State Community College hosts more than 350 guests during Open House

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State Community College hosted an Open House this week, attracting more than 350 prospective students and family members.

Open House attendees were welcomed by Wallace State President Dr. Vicki Karolewics at the event’s outset and then treated to a performance by the Wallace State Singers.

Dr. Jon Stephenson, Coordinator of Student Engagement and Recruiting, and Kristen Holmes, Interim Vice President for Students and Chief Marketing Officer, also addressed the crowd.

Prospective students had the opportunity to tour programs of their choice across campus and converse with college representatives from admissions, advising, financial aid, dual enrollment, and more.

Jorja Stewart is a sophomore from Cullman High, enrolled in Wallace State’s Fast Track program. She visited multiple programs during the Open House, including the Engineering Technology and Mechatronics programs.

“I’m trying to check all the boxes and keep an open mind. I’m thankful Wallace State allows the public to see all that’s offered. It’s a great eye-opener,” said Stewart, who had plans to learn more about computer science and multiple health science programs during the event.

Isabel Chavez has earned a scholarship to Wallace State for the 2022-2023 academic year, and she visited the event with her brother, Noe, a Wallace State (2017) and UAB graduate.

“Wallace State gave me a good foundation to get me where I am today,” said Noe Chavez, who works at Gardendale First Baptist Church as a multimedia expert. “I’ve expressed to Isabel how Wallace State is a great place to start.”

Isabel Chavez plans to major is business education.

Paris Smith and her family drove more than 130 miles from Montgomery for the Open House. Smith is enrolled in the Alabama Virtual Academy based out of Eufaula and had been encouraged by the institution to visit Wallace State’s Dental Hygiene program.

“I really wanted to come and get a feel for everything before I decide,” said Smith, who will begin classes at Wallace State during the Fall 2022 semester.

Prospective students in attendance had a chance to win a three-hour course scholarship for the Summer 2022 semester. The winners were:

Registration for the Summer and Fall 2022 semesters is currently underway at Wallace State. The college offers day, night, online and hybrid courses at both the main campus and in Oneonta. Summer semester classes begin Tuesday, May 24.
