HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s sixth-ranked golf team qualified for the program’s 20th national tournament this week after finishing fourth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) District 4 championships at Willow Point Country Club in Alexander City.
Wallace State freshman Sylas Elliott and sophomore Cooper Brown both finished with a 16-over par 232, marking the best individual scores for the Lions. Wallace State’s Walker Gordon carded a 18-over 234.
Eastern Florida won the district tournament with a 22-over 886 in the three-round event. Central Alabama finished runner-up, Faulkner State was third and Wallace State fourth. The Lions shot a 315-311-304 for a 930 overall score.
Wallace State now shifts is focus to the NJCAA District I national tournament set for May 12-15 in Newton, Kansas. The Lions finished NJCAA Division I national runner-up last season in Burlington, Iowa, the third time Wallace State has been national runner-up under coach Dan York.
Brown earned an NJCAA Division I individual national championship last season, winning the Arnold Palmer Award with a 5-over par 293. It marked the second consecutive season Wallace State has laid claim to the individual national champion after Aksel Olsen achieved the feat in 2013.
Wallace State will enter the national tournament as the ACCC/Region 22 tournament champion after the Lions captured the conference crown in April for the second consecutive season and 12th time overall. Elliott was the conference tournament low medalist.
