Wallace State basketball teams lose to rival Shelton State in first meetings of season

HANCEVILLE – Wallace State’s basketball teams lost the first round of their annual rivalry with Shelton State Thursday night, losing a pair of games at Tom Drake Coliseum.
Four Shelton State men finished with double figures and cruised to an 81-62 victory, exacting a dose of revenge after losing last season’s ACCC state tournament championship on its home floor to Wallace State (13-9, 1-4 ACCC).
Jestin Lewis, Wallace State’s leading scorer this season, led the Lions in the loss with 15 points, Marcus Johnson had 14 and Jamalcolm Griffin added 13.
Ladarius Tabb poured in 24 points for the Bucs, Antjuan Bell scored 15, Travis Daniels had 13 and D’Arieal Franklin contributed 10.
Johnson accounted for six of Wallace State’s first eight points, helping the Lions control an early 8-2 lead during the opening two minutes. Shelton State quickly battled back and tied the game at 10-10 with 15:20 remaining in the first half. Tabb scored a go-ahead bucket on Shelton State’s following possession and the Bucs never surrendered the lead.
Shelton State (16-5, 4-0 ACCC) led 35-19 at halftime.
Shelton State women 83, Wallace State 53
Wallace State’s Ashley Nance recorded her 14th double-double of the season in the loss to the undefeated Lady Bucs, who proved quickly they’re deserving of their No. 6 NJCAA national ranking.
Nance scored 10 points and collected 11 rebounds for the Lady Lions, Kelsie Montgomery had eight points off the bench and Jasmine Coleman contributed seven points and six rebounds.
Shelton State opened the game’s first seven minutes on a 20-4 surge and coasted the rest of the way. The Lady Bucs led 41-22 at halftime.
Brianna Lancaster scored a game-high 15 points for Shelton State (22-0, 4-0 ACCC), Dominique Henley had 13 points, hitting all three of her attempts from behind the 3-point line, Quenisha Lockett scored 12 and Sharin Rivers contributed 10.
Wallace State’s women are now 15-7 overall and 2-2 in the ACCC.
Both Wallace State teams resume conference play Monday, traveling to Lawson State.
