New-look lineup lifts Wallace State volleyball past Jeff Davis

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State volleyball picked up its second conference victory in three days on Friday, rolling past Jeff Davis at Tom Drake Coliseum.
Wallace State (16-3, 7-0 Alabama Community College Conference), which extended its conference winning streak to 21 matches, prevailed 25-16, 25-14, 25-16 behind a new starting lineup. Coach Randy Daniel used the match to get some ample action for the team’s key reserves.
Freshman Tara Miller finished with 30 assists, four digs and three kills to pace Wallace State, sophomore Sidney Cooper had 15 digs and four kills, August Newberry collected 14 digs and MaKenzie Bearden added 10 kills and three digs.
Beth Maples added nine kills and three digs for the Lions and Latresia Williams had eight kills and four blocks.
“It’s important to get all of our players an opportunity to get on the court throughout the course of the season. We need to see who we can rely on in crucial situations,” Daniel said.
Wallace State trailed 12-10 early in the first set for its only deficit of the match. The Lions closed the set on a 15-4 run for a 25-16 win. Wallace State cruised in the final two sets.
Wallace State began play in the Wallace State Invitational on Friday evening and hosts Snead State and Jefferson (Mo.) College at Tom Drake Coliseum on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
Wallace State continues conference play Wednesday as it hosts Southern Union and Lawson State beginning at 5 p.m.
