HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The “Seasons of Love” will be brought to life during the Wallace State Community College Choir’s concerts at 1 and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, in the Recital Hall of the Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts.
Choir Director Tiffany Richter said the almost 40-member choir will perform a variety of songs that follow every emotion associated with love. “Everything is going to talk about some kind of love,” she said, “the good, the bad, and the ugly, romantic love, break-ups, marriage, family love, love of the Creator to humans, love of mankind.”
Along with classical and modern arrangements, there will be dramatic readings of poetry and speeches.
A few of the performances will include “The Marriage” with text by 13th century poet Rumi, poetry by Emily Dickenson, and the Billy Joel Tune “Lullaby, Good Night My Angel.”
All of the songs will be performed as a whole by the choir, with the readings by choir members who are also in the college’s theater program.
While all of the choir members are not music majors – the choir is open to all WSCC students – Richter said all of them are naturally talented.
“It’s a joy to shape that and give them a little more knowledge in the field of music,” she said. “Some have decided to major in music after being in choir.”
The April 16 performance is the kick-off to the choir’s trip to the International Music Festival in New York. They were invited to perform April 20 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and on April 22 at the Kennedy Center in New York. The choir will be adjudicated during their trip to the festival.
In addition to performances, choir members will have the opportunity to take part in a master class presided over by an official from the International Music Festival.
The April 16 concerts at Wallace State are free and open to the public, but donations will be accepted to help offset the cost of the trip to New York, Richter said.
Richter said she thinks those attending the concert will be surprised at how much they will enjoy the performance.
“If you really want to experience the love of music and just celebrate love, then you need to come and experience this night, it’s going to be different and very fun.”
