Lady Lions Sweep Conference Opener at Snead

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The nationally-ranked Wallace State-Hanceville softball team (29-6, 2-0 ACCC) swept its conference opener against Snead State, winning 7-5 and 1-0 in a doubleheader at Boaz on Saturday.
Lindsey DeFee (13-3) earned the win in the first game, pitching the complete game and giving up two earned runs, nine hits, and two walks while striking out 9 batters.
Wallace State racked up 14 hits, led by left fielder Katie Gentle, who went 2-for-3 including a first inning triple and three-run homerun in the fourth inning. Victoria Frith went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Brittany Gillison drove in a run with a double. Kori Benson went 3-for-4. Madeline Lee hit a double and a single in four at bats. Maria Mitchell was 2-for-3 with a run. Shaquille Morris was 1-for-3 with a run.
The second game was a pitcher’s dual won by Brianna Blevins (13-2), who gave up five hits and one walk, while striking out seven batters. Paige Rowland’s fourth inning solo run home run was the sole score of the second game. Laken Hancock, Madeline Lee and Maria Mitchell also had hits for Wallace State.
The Lady Lions will play a double header at Shelton State on Sunday.
“We were glad to get these first two conference wins behind us, but Shelton will be a big match up for us, especially playing there, because they are leading the conference right now,” said Coach Jayne Clem.
The Lady Lions will play their home opener against Gadsden State on Tuesday, April 9, in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
