No. 12 Wallace State softball extends winning streak to 9 games; WSCC baseball and golf updates

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s 12th-ranked softball team is on a roll. The Lady Lions swept Lansing (Mich.) College in a doubleheader in their home opener on Sunday, winning 3-0 and 10-2.
Wallace State (15-15) has won nine consecutive games after a slow start to the season.
In Sunday’s finale, freshman Amber Hammonds finished a perfect 3-for-3 with her first collegiate homer, three RBIs, two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases as Wallace State won in five innings.
Leisha Yamauchi was also 3-for-3 for Wallace State, Katie Parr had a pair of hits and an RBI and Taylor Beshears went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, two RBIs, three runs scored and two stolen bases. Beshears, a freshman from Hewitt-Trussville, leads the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) with 38 RBIs.
Sarah Ellen Battles had a single and scored two runs for Wallace State, while Shelby Brown added a single.
Brittany Ledbetter (5-2) posted a pair of wins on the mound against the Stars, including tossing a four-hitter in the opener. She struck out eight batters and walked two in the seven-inning shutout. Ledbetter picked up the win in relief in the finale, throwing two scoreless innings.
Jessie Butler started for Wallace State in the second game, allowing two runs and four hits over three innings.
Sophomore Molli Garcia hit her second homer of the season in the opener, Beshears had an RBI double, Hammonds had a single, a stolen base and scored twice, Yamauchi doubled and Parr added a single.
Wallace State hosts Columbia State at Bobby McCracken Stadium for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Wallace State’s baseball team defeated Hinds (Miss.) Community College 5-1 at Lawson State over the weekend.
Wallace State freshman Blake Schilleci, an Oak Mountain graduate, picked up his first collegiate win with seven scoreless innings. Lane Wallace pitched the final two innings for the Lions (12-7).
Wallace State, winners of eight of nine, visits Georgia Highlands on Tuesday and hosts Northeast Mississippi for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

The Wallace State men’s golf team placed third last week at the Doublegate Collegiate Invitational in Albany, Ga.
Wallace State sophomore Sylas Elliott earned all-tournament recognition for the second consecutive event, finishing in a three-way tie for fourth with a 3-over par 219. Elliott carded a 73-75-71.
Eli Marty finished with a 10-over 226 for the Lions.
Wallace State has finished third in consecutive tournaments. The Lions shot a 7-over par 295 during the third round, tying Eastern Florida State for the best mark during the final 18. Wallace State shot an 896 overall, finishing 18 shots behind tournament champion Darton State College.
Wallace State travels to Albany, Ga., again on March 13-15 to participate in the Stonebridge Invitational.
Wallace State’s women’s golf team plays its spring tournament opener today and Tuesday in the Badger Invitational at Mobile.
