Wallace State softball stays hot with sweep of Calhoun; WSCC baseball drops pair to Southern Union

HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State softball continued to roll through conference play Thursday night, sweeping a doubleheader against Calhoun at Bobby McCracken Stadium.
The Lady Lions overcame a 5-0 deficit in the opener, scoring seven unanswered runs for a 7-5 victory, and sophomore Julia Dailey tossed a complete game in a 3-2 triumph in the nightcap.
Wallace State (36-18, 17-1 Alabama Community College Conference) has won 17 of its last 18 games and 30 of 33.
In Thursday’s opener, Calhoun scooted out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and made it 5-0 after 4 ½ innings.
Wallace State countered with a five-run fourth inning, tying the game at 5-all. Shelby Brown, Jennifer Gonzalez and Katie Parr each had RBIs in the inning.
Wallace State seized a 7-5 lead in the sixth. Olivia Royal led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Taylor Beshears run-scoring single. Karra Elam added an RBI single later in the inning, scoring Beshears.
Jessie Butler, a freshman from Lexington High, was the winning pitcher for Wallace State. Butler (3-1) relieved Brittany Ledbetter in the first and went 6 2/3 innings, scattering a run on five hits and striking out three.
Butler stranded the bases loaded in the top of seventh.
Brown finished 2 for 3 with a double, a pair of RBIs and a run scored for the Lady Lions, and Gonzalez was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Sarah Ellen Battles doubled and scored, and Molli Garcia and Ashton Gaddy scored a run apiece.
Dailey (3-0) was effective on the hill in the second game, going the distance in her first start of the season. The sophomore from Huntsville High yielded two runs on 10 hits.
Wallace State trailed 2-0 after the top of the first, but answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning and added two more in the third.
Brown went 2 for 3 with a run scored for the Lady Lions, Parr finished with a pair of hits, including a double, and an RBI, Molli Garcia had an RBI single and a stolen base, Beshears doubled and scored and Battles added a stolen base.
Wallace State continues conference play Saturday at Central Alabama.
Wallace State baseball loses pair to Southern Union
Wallace State baseball dropped a pair of games to Southern Union at James C. Bailey Stadium on Thursday night.
The Bison prevailed 8-1 in nine innings and 7-5 in a seven-inning affair.
In the opener, Southern Union led 3-1 after six innings and added two runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth.
Jonathan Smith had a pair of hits for Wallace State, Darien Prewett singled and scored, Stephen Dobbs went 1 for 3, Cole Collins had a single and Turner Vincent an RBI.
Jesse Scott started for Wallace State and allowed three runs on five hits, striking out five and walking three.
In the second game, Wallace State scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but was unable to rally entirely.
Dobbs went 2 for 3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored for the Lions, Smith had a pair of hits and scored a run and Gerrio Rahming went 2 for 4 with a double. Collins and Parks Shoulders each tallied RBI singles in the seventh.
The teams continue their four-game series in Wadley on Saturday.
