Area high school students delve into biology, forensics during Wallace State’s BioTech camp

HANCEVILLE – A four-day BioTech camp at Wallace State Community College last week introduced area high school students to the wonders of DNA and gene sequencing.
The camp was available to students from 9-12 grades, and the participants participated in projects in a variety of biological areas including DNA extraction, genes and their sequences, micropipetting, cell exploration and medicinal attributes.
The camp participants were also introduced to the college’s criminal justice department. Instructor Thea Hall demonstrated all the capabilities available through Wallace State’s forensics lab and allowed students to practice finger-printing methods and conduct drug and hair analyses among other activities.
Additionally, Bruce Tenison, Director of e-Learning at Wallace State, gave a presentation about 3-D images to the group, and enrollment specialist Tad Parker discussed registration and admission procedures.
Wallace State Biology Instructor Beth Williams and biology tutor Josh Reid guided the campers throughout the week’s biological projects.
Williams said the students thoroughly enjoyed the week and had a hard time picking one activity or project that stood out among the others.
“We had four students who were repeat students from last year and several more said they would be back next year. Overall, I think the students learned a lot and had fun doing it,” Williams added.
The camp was sponsored by the Wallace State Alumni Association. A $100 stipend was awarded to students who completed the camp.
