WSCC Athletics: Men’s golf finishes tournament runner-up in Foley; softball, baseball and tennis updates
HANCEVILLE, ALA. — Wallace State’s men’s golf finished tournament runner-up at the GlenLakes Invitational in Foley on Tuesday, marking the team’s third runner-up finish this season.
Sophomore Conner Bruce made the All-Tournament team for Wallace State, carding a 4-over par 220 (71-73-76). It’s Bruce’s second time to earn All-Tournament recognition this spring after capturing low medalist honors at last month’s Coastal Alabama Invitational.
Wallace State’s Carter Goodwin and Matt Smith each finished tied for 16th with a 12-over 228. Cody Maddox was on their heels with a 13-over 229. Anthony Lumpkin (231) rounded out the field for the Lions.
Central Alabama won the tournament, outlasting Wallace State by seven strokes.
Wallace State now prepares for the ACCC/Region 22 Tournament, set for April 7-9 at the same course in Foley. The Lions are seeking the program’s 14th conference championship.
No. 10 Wallace State softball
Wallace State’s 10th-ranked softball team had an offensive outburst to remember at Bevill State on Tuesday.
The Lions (32-6, 5-3 Alabama Community College Conference) combined for 42 runs and 40 hits, including 12 extra-base hits and five homers, as they swept the Lady Bears with five-inning wins of 23-0 and 19-7.
Addie Robinson blasted a pair of homers for Wallace State in the doubleheader and Chaney Phillips, Kalynn Holcomb and Katie Burden also homered. Robinson leads Wallace State in RBIs this season, while Phillips blasted her first career collegiate homer.
Wallace State continues conference action at Southern Union on Thursday. The Lions return home on Tuesday to host Shelton State in a doubleheader.
Wallace State baseball
Wallace State’s baseball team hosts Bevill State at James. C. Bailey Stadium on Thursday beginning at 2 p.m.
Wallace State (13-8, 9-3 ACCC) sits atop the ACCC North Division standings after three conference series.
Coach Randy Putman’s club split a four-game series with Southern Union last weekend. The Lions dropped the opening games in Wadley before registering a pair of home wins on March 23, winning 7-3 and 9-3.
Brady Sherrill had a homer and five RBIs combined in the two home wins, and Easton Kirk and Brennan McCullough each added a home run in the final game of the series.
Sophomore Noah Fondren had four hits in the final two games, scoring four runs and collecting two RBIs. Fondren is hitting .392 this season with 12 RBIs.
Kirk is hitting a team-high .517 with six homers and 24 RBIs.
Garrett Brown and Taylor Goodwin were the winning pitchers. Goodwin tossed five scoreless innings in relief for the victory.
Wallace State tennis
Wallace State’s tennis teams swept Coastal Alabama-South on the road on Tuesday.
The 16th-ranked men’s team prevailed 8-1 and the 24th-ranked Wallace State women won 9-0 as both teams remained undefeated in ACCC action.
On a recent Mississippi road swing, the men finished 1-2, beating Jones County CC. The women went 2-1, defeating Meridian CC and Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Both Wallace State teams host Coastal Alabama-South on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
