HANCEVILLE, ALA. — Wallace State’s men’s golf program takes pride in hosting the first tournament of each fall season.

This week’s Dan York Memorial Tournament at Musgrove Country Club in Jasper carried additional meaning for the Lions.

Wallace State sophomore Carter Goodwin made the All-Tournament team, finishing tied for third, and the Lions placed fifth overall in an event honoring York, the late Wallace State Hall of Fame golf coach. The tournament’s name was switched from the Wallace State Fall Invitational to the Dan York Memorial Tournament after York died from cancer in February.

“Renaming this tournament keeps coach York with us. He always enjoyed hosting the first tournament of a new fall season and was excited to see all of the new and returning faces. The friendships that were built from this tournament were important to him,” said Wallace State golf coach Sylas Elliott. “It’s tough on all of us that he’s not around, but I know he would be very pleased with the number of teams that participated. It keeps him present among us.”

A tournament-record 11 teams participated in Wallace State’s fall kickoff – a 54-hole event.

Goodwin, a Spain Park graduate, carded a 4-under par 209 (68-69-72), notching his first All-Tournament recognition at Wallace State. He tied with Central Alabama’s Dylan Moncus.

Allen Michael Burnett tied for seventh overall for Wallace State, finishing with an even-par 213 (67-71-75) in his first collegiate tournament. Burnett’s 67 on the opening 18 holes tied two others for the best mark that round.

Sophomore Hunter McKelvy and freshmen Alex Flint and Patrick Minor each shot a 12-over 225 for the Lions.

As a unit, Wallace State finished with a 15-over 867 (289-289-289).

Wallace State’s next tournament is Sept. 22-24 at the Georgia Military Invite.

No. 14 Wallace State volleyball remains undefeated

Wallace State’s 14^th-ranked volleyball team pushed its record a perfect 13-0 on Tuesday night, sweeping Cleveland State at home.

The Lions prevailed 25-4, 25-12, 25-13, behind a balanced attack.

Diamond Jones had seven kills, Karlee Hale had six kills, Amryi Grace Paris finished with five kills and Jordan Hollis added four.

KaLea Davis registered a team-high 18 assists and added two digs, while Anna Renshaw had 17 assists.

Lauren Seibert finished with a team-high 15 digs for Wallace State and Kaitlyn Doyle (six digs, four kills), Harlee Kate Reid (seven digs, four kills) and Tori Walker (six digs, four kills) provided significant contributions.

Wallace State hosts Bevill State today at 6 p.m., looking to improve to 4-0 in Alabama Community College Conference action.

Wallace State Cross Country teams place in Top 10 at Montevallo

Wallace State cross country teams each had Top 10 finishes last weekend at the Montevallo Falcon Classic, including the best marks for community college teams.

Wallace State’s men finished eighth out of 17 teams in the 8K.

Freshman Jaden Vance had the Lions’ top finish with a 26:32.59. He placed 39^th overall among 170 runners. Teammate Jonathan Jenkins was two spots behind Vance at 41^st overall with a 26:40.95.

Christian Terry clocked in at 27:53.18 for the Lions and Joshua Jenkins at 28:05.75.

Hamza Abusammour (28:14.16), Taylor Nails (28:27.77), Jackson Tucker (29:29.28), Trenton Williams (29:54.14) and Preston Jones (34:36.04) rounded out the field for Wallace State.

Wallace State’s women finished ninth overall in the 5K run at Montevallo.

Logan Ayers notched Wallace State’s top finish, placing 37^th overall with a 20:49.35.

Sophomore Tatiana Padgett was 51^st overall with a 21:15.55.

Ashleigh White (21:47.26), Hannah Huntley (22:14.52), Makala Worrell (22:38.72), Breanna Smith (22:45.56), Juliana Ballew (22:50.12), Maggie Graham (23:44.53), Bailey Wick (24:03.54), Alexandra Holt (25:16.39) and Erika Persons (27:22.86 rounded out the Wallace State field.

The next meet for both teams is Sept. 21 at Huntingdon College in Montgomery.
